Eddie Guerrero était prédéstiné puisqu'il est le fils de Gory Guerrero, l'une des plus grandes figures de l'histoire de la lucha libre. Il compte parmi ses frères des grands catcheurs tels que Mando, Hector et Chavo. C'est d'ailleurs sous la tutelle de ce dernier et de son père principalement qu'il apprend le métier de catcheur, désireux de faire honneur au nom des Guerrero.

Il débute en 1987 à l'EMLL, auprès de sa famille puis rejoint en 1992, poussé par des considérations financières, l'AAA. Subvenir aux besoins de sa famille sera tout au long de sa carrière une des priorités. Il va y former Los Gringos Locos avec le regretté "Love Machine" Art Barr une des équipes les plus redoutées de l'histoire du catch méxicain. Il y incarne "Black Tiger", ennemi juré du légendaire personnage "Tiger Mask" (ces deux identités seront incarnées par différents catcheur successivement au fil des ans). Il y remportera même le prestigieux tournoi Super Junior en 1996.

A la suite du décès de son partenaire, Art Barr, Eddie s'implante sur la scène américaine en rejoignant en 1994 l'ECW, fédération montante et ayant marqué cette fin de siècle. Il y retrouve Dean Malenko et Chris Benoît. Il s'empare à deux reprises du championnat de la Télévision, face à Too Cold Scorpio puis face à Dean Malenko. Il offre au public américain des prestations qui vont finir de le faire remarquer auprès de la WCW.

Il rejoint la WCW en 1996. Ses débuts sont peu spéctaculaires mais s'empare tout du même du championnat des Etats-Unis. C'est alors qu'il se blesse. Il en profite pour revenir en heel et bouleverser sa carrière. Il est alors un des rares heels qui ne soit pas membre de la NWO, alors toute puissante et réalise de très grands matchs face à Ultimo Dragon, Chris Benoît, Dean Malenko et Rey Mysterio Jr. entre autres, contribuant à faire pleinement apprécier l'importance et la qualité des cruiserweights alors présents. Il y remporte par deux fois le titre Cruiserweight, face à Chris Jericho, puis face à Rey Mysterio Jr. Il va également s'engager dans un long feud avec son neveu, Chavo Guerrero Jr. qu'il a pu faire engager. Il crée même la LWO, la Latino World Order, qui peine à démarrer, mais commence à croitre en popularité.

Cependant, tout n'est pas rose dans la vie de Guerrero. Ainsi, le 31 décembre 1999, Eddie a un terrible accident de la circulation. Il perd le contrôle de son véhicule, l'esprit embrumé par les drogues. Bléssé sérieusement, il va s'acharner à revenir. Trop vite. Il abuse des anti-douleurs. Il retrouve le ring et rejoint vite les Filthy Animals, avec Konnan, Billy Kidman et Rey Mysterio. Mais les bouleversements de la direction de la WCW l'inquiète. Aussi, accompagné de ses amis de longue date Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko et Chris Benoît, quitte-t-il la WCW. Il considère rejoindre l'ECW mais la WWF exprime vite son interêt. Aussi débute-t-il à RAW le 31 janvier 2000 en compagnie de ses amis, désormais connus sous le nom de Radicalz. Il y connait un succès certains, accompagné de Chyna, y gagnant le surnom de Latino Heat. A ses côtés, il s'empare du titre Européen face à Chris Jericho. Il trahira ensuite sa partenaire pour lui ravir le titre Intercontinental.

Mais les démons de Guerrero le rattrapent. L'équipe dirigeante de la WWF l'enjoint de suivre une cure de désintoxication. Il s'y plie, mais elle n'est pas couronnée de succès. Peu de temps après, il est arrêté pour avoir conduit sous l'influence de stupéfiants et d'alcool. Il est licencié par la WWF le 12 novembre 2001.

Eddie Guerrero connait alors une renaissance. Il abandonne la drogue et l'alcool, se tourne vers Dieu et s'embarque pour un long périple à travers le globe. Il catch ainsi
dans de multiples fédérations et promotions (FWA, Ring Of Honor, IWA-Midsouth, WWA, NJPW...) où il ravit les fans de son talent.

Ayant prouvé sa détermination et sa sobriété, Eddie Guerrero fait son retour à la WWF le 2 Avril 2002. Il s'engage immédiatement dans un feud avec Rob Van Dam et remporte son titre Intercontinental. Lors de la séparation de RAW et Smackdown, il rejoint ce dernier show. Il va vite s'aligner auprès de son neveu, Chavo Guerrero Jr et conquérir le titre par équipe à deux reprises. Cependant, la popularité de Eddie ne cesse de croitre. Après s'être emparé du championnat des Etats-Unis, en finale d'un tournoi face à Chris Benoît, la dissenssion s'installe entre lui et son neveu. Il se séparent et Eddie s'engage à nouveau dans une carrière en solo. Au Royal Rumble 2004, il défait son neveu, puis entame sa course au titre suprême en remportant un mini-Royal Rumble au cours de Smackdown le 29 janvier 2004.

Et à No Way Out 2004, Eddie est propulsé sur le devant de la scène et s'emparant enfin, face à Brock Lesnar, du titre mondial tant mérité.

Son règne durera quelques mois, Guerrero retenant le titre face à des challengers comme Kurt Angle, The Big Show ou Rey Mysterio, mais il devra l'abandonner à John "Bradshaw" Layfield dans un Texas Bullrope Match suite à une décision de Kurt Angle. A Summerslam, Latino Heat et le champion olympique s'affrontent et Eddie sera victime de l'Ankle Lock. La rivalité entre les deux catcheurs continue et aux Survivor Series, ils forment chacun une équipe de 4 hommes afin de prouver qui est le meilleur. Suite à un Frog Splash, Guerrero remportera la victoire. Puis Eddie fera équipe avec Booker T afin de tenter de remporter le titre par équipe, mais sans succès. Cependant Latino Heat remportera le titre quelque temps plus tard en équipe avec Rey Mysterio en battant les Basham Brothers à No Way Out 2005. Alors que tout le monde s'attendait à ce qu'ils défendent le titre à Wrestlemania 21, les deux catcheurs décident de s'affronter et Mysterio remportera la victoire. La tension monte alors entre les deux et finalement ils devront abandonner le titre à MNM. Lors du combat retour contre les champions par équipe, Guerrero abandonne son partenaire et tourne Heel. Il attaquera le lutteur masqué à plusieurs occasions et les deux s'affrontent à Judgement Day 2005 où Rey gagnera par disqualification. Leur rivalité continue et le fils de Rey, Dominik, rentre en scène. En effet, Eddie menace de révéler son secret et fera chanter Rey, mais finalement révélera que Dominik est en fait son propre fils que Mysterio a adopté. Les deux hommes s'affrontent alors à Summerslam 2005 dans un combat à échelle où le gagnant aurait la garde de Dominik et ce sera Mysterio qui gagnera. Cependant c'est Eddie qui remportera la victoire finale après avoir remporté un combat en cage lors de la première édition du vendredi de SmackDown!. Suite à cette victoire, Guerrero sera nommé aspirant #1 au titre et doit affronter Batista à No Mercy 2005. Bien que rivaux, Eddie se dit ami de Batista et les deux hommes lutteront même en équipe dans une série de combat contre MNM. Mais au moment de leur affrontement, leur amitié ne rentre pas en compte et Batista remportera la victoire. Lorsqu'au Survivor Series 2005, les équipes représentant les roster de Raw et de SmackDown! doivent s'affronter, des matchs sont organisés pour désigner les membres de ses factions. Guerrero affronte ainsi Ken Kennedy, et utilisant une de ses traditionnels techniques de triches, il parvient à battre son adversaire pour représenter SmackDown! au Survivor Series.
